A Sneak Peak at the Upcoming Savas Beatie Author Conclave

by Sarah Keeney

Seriously. It all started with a magazine.

The IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) (https://www.ibpa-online.org/) monthly magazine is a hot item around the Savas Beatie (http://www.savasbeatie.com/) office. Managing Director Ted Savas sneaks it home when we aren’t looking, forcing me to devour the articles online.

In short, it’s a wonderful resource for people in the publishing world (authors, publishers, booksellers, etc.) to learn how to survive and thrive in these trying book-business times. We’ve even had a couple articles in the publication recently about our unique marketing efforts and bulk sales program to the military.

A few months ago, Ted read an article lamenting the fact that authors work alone, and that publishers ignore their true potential at their peril. We have a handful of local authors and know them well, and have met a few others on various battlefield visits, but the truth is that we have never met 75% of them. Ted started thinking . . . What about holding an organized author event? As Ted saw it, getting many authors together, lifting our mugs in celebration, breaking bread, and touring the fields would bring us all closer together, generate new publishing ideas, and harness energy, knowledge, and enthusiasm all at the same time.

And so we started planning the First Savas Beatie Author Conclave (http://www.savasbeatie.com/Conclave.htm). Gettysburg seemed an appropriate setting. We asked our authors, and then decided to do the same for our readers (and anyone in the area) to join us on the Gettysburg and Antietam battlefields for three days, July 28, 29, and 30, for some informative talks, hang-out events, and an all-around good time. The schedule can be found at the link above. I don’t think I’m spoiling too much by divulging that there’s even a pool party involved. (No, JD. It is not “clothing optional.”) =)

Thanks to the dynamic duo at Emerging Civil War (who also happen to be Savas Beatie authors), we’ll be posting live updates throughout the day from the field as well as photos (and maybe even some video) in the coming days. We’d love for you to join us virtually on this trip. You can also keep an eye on the Savas Beatie Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/savasbeatie). If you have a question for one of our authors, post a comment and I’ll see what we can do about getting you an answer.
