Day Nine (part two) in a series coinciding with the federal government shutdown
The former capitol of the Confederacy is a hub of Civil War sites; campaigns in both 1862 and 1864 left the surrounding area dotted with battlefield sites, mainly operated by Richmond National Battlefield Park.
However, there are several non-NPS sites in Richmond that you should visit (even after the NPS is back in operation).
The Virginia Historical Society offers exhibits on Virginia, but has a wealth of Civil War resources (including the mural painting the Four Seasons of the Confederacy that was recently restored).
Hollywood Cemetery is the final resting place of dozens of famous Confederates, including Jefferson Davis, and has an entire section of Confederate soldiers.
Monument Avenue is also a gem of Richmond and well worth the walk on a nice day.
