Weakly, Whitman

I have been missing in action for several weeks now. I have cancer, and all was not well there for a while. I missed Uncle Walt, and I hope his readers did as well. Emerging Civil War editor Sarah Bierle has graciously filled in a few times, and I appreciate that no end! I think I am back now, however. We shall see!

Here is a concise little poem to tide you over until the next week, when I plan on continuing Whitman’s poetic responses to the death of President Lincoln. It was first published in Leaves of Grass but is also in my copy of Drum-Taps. After my cancer diagnosis, the idea of “thoughts & prayers” no longer seemed so ephemeral.

A Child’s Amaze

SILENT and amazed, even when a little boy,

I remember I heard the preacher every Sunday put God in his statements. As contending against some being or influence.
