Kristen M. Pawlak

Preservation Editor

As a historian of the Civil War in Missouri and the Trans-Mississippi West, as well as having a passion for the preservation of history, Kristen brings new research and important topics to ECW.

Her passion and expertise in the Civil War, particularly of that in Missouri, traces back to 2002, when she became involved with the Missouri Civil War Museum, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and museum facility founded by her father. The museum is located in the historic 1905 Post Exchange Building at Jefferson Barracks Historic Site in St. Louis. While being a part of the project to save the historic building, turning it into the state’s largest Civil War museum, and taking trips to local battlefields, Kristen developed a passion for Civil War history.

Kristen received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Civil War Era Studies from Gettysburg College and her Master of Arts degree in Nonprofit Leadership from Webster University in St. Louis. Previously, Kristen has worked for the Missouri Civil War Museum, the American Battlefield Trust, and the Special Collections at Gettysburg College. Her experiences there have developed my research, analytical, and writing skills, as well as her overall knowledge of the Civil War Era.

Kristen hopes that through her experiences, love of Missouri and the Trans-Mississippi West, and desire to share new interpretation and research on this overlooked area of Civil War history, she can benefit the Civil War community.

(And, if you’re wondering…yes! Kristen is married to Kevin Pawlak, who is also an ECW author.)
