Saving History Saturday: Hoke’s Run Battlefield Park
The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation (SVBF), the Berkeley County Commission, and the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation Board recently announced a public-private partnership to establish Berkeley County’s first battlefield park, the Hoke’s Run Battlefield Park.
The planned park is on 10 acres of the Battle of Hoke’s Run battlefield, and is located off WV 901, and came about through an agreement between SVBF and the Parks & Recreation Board. Future plans for the site include a recreation trail, interpretive signage, pavilion, and restrooms.
Fought on July 2, 1861, the battle of Hoke’s Run involved Union forces under the command of General Robert Patterson, and a smaller Confederate force led by Col. Thomas Jackson (later to be known as “Stonewall” Jackson). The battle is also known as the battle of Falling Waters or the battle of Hainesville.
“Preservation and interpretation of Civil War sites in the Falling Waters area has been the mission of our organization since 2004, and we couldn’t be more thrilled by the collaboration of our community leaders and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation to bring about the protection of this site,” said Falling Waters Battlefield Association Inc. President Gary Gimbel.
