About Us

Emerging Civil War serves as a public history-oriented platform for sharing original scholarship related to the American Civil War.

Our primary audience is the general public, so scholarship is defined broadly: historical research, memory studies, travelogues, personal narratives, essays, book reviews, and photography. Journalistic-style coverage of current Civil War-related events and the Civil War in pop culture are also included. Furthermore, ECW encourages respectful discussion about that material. ECW does not publish fiction or poetry.

ECW seeks to encourage a diversity of perspectives in the scholarship it presents. We do that, in part, by identifying and spotlighting the next generation of Civil War historians and the fresh ideas they bring to the historical conversation.

As a collective, the individuals who comprise ECW are encouraged to share their own unique interests and approaches. The combined collection of material—and the respectful discussions that surround it—forward ECW’s overall effort to promote a general awareness of the Civil War as America’s defining event.

Emerging Civil War encourages a free exchange of ideas. We do encourage those with differing opinions to express their disagreements, but we expect the exchange between all to be respectful. Vulgarity and personal attacks will not be tolerated.

Please note, any opinions expressed at Emerging Civil War are those solely of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of any organization they work for.

  2. I wonder if you could help me. I’m doing historiographical research on the Civil War, comparing authors from the 1910s-20s to authors from 2010-present and I don’t really know where I should start. Any suggestions?

Weather at physical therapy or simply trying to take my mind off of stressful situation this site has brought me nothing but joy. For 20 years I read nothing but material on the Second World War. After a friend picked up Shelby foots trilogy on the Civil War to cheer me up and give me something to do in the hospital it’s sat on my bedside for a couple days until my orthopedic surgeon after examining my knees before he made his way out stated the trilogy was an excellent introduction to the Civil War. After that I started reading it and I breathe through Page after page as if I couldn’t get enough of it. Eventually I asked my friend to pick me up a book on a battle in Kentucky since that was one of the closer battles to my hometown of Detroit, that battle was Perryville and I didn’t know at the time but obviously it was written by Professor Chris and only made me hungrier for material on the Civil War. My only complaint was I was reading so much material so quickly I was left with a lot of questions and having only a bachelor’s degree and history I had taken a lot of classes concerning the Second World War I had only taken one on the Civil War. After reading another excellent emerging Civil War Book I was Googling some information on it when I came across this blog and it has brought me nothing as I said before, nothing but pure joy. I have learned so much from this site and such a fun way, debates which always remain professional, courteous, and downright friendly no matter how much people disagree amazed me. I would argue that this blog is one of the most highly educated blogs on the internet whether it be professors, authors of 10 or more books, or people who have spent their lives volunteering at Civil War parks. My dream was always to get my bachelor’s in history from Michigan which I did and then to join the Marines officer Corps which I did and then when I got out to let the military pay for my Master’s and eventually my PhD and history with a strong major on the Second World War. I would then Teach as a professor and hoped to author books on the different facets of the Eastern front of the second World War. Unfortunately my journey was interrupted while still in the Marines when my last tour didn’t go as I hoped it would. Due to a variety of reasons including the fact I have physical and mental physical therapy and will for the foreseeable future my documented education will have to be put on hold or all together stop at the bachelor level. But due to this site I can continually keep learning and find answers to my questions and see different conclusions stemming from the same problems I read about which only educates me more. I have decided to embark on a journey of trying to write that book and have it published except it will be on the Civil War and it will not be by a professor but somebody with a bachelor’s degree. I have decided to start it this winter with no restraints or due dates, and with the friends and their relationships I’ve made with the extremely intelligent people on this site I will rewrite it and rewrite it until it is found well above acceptable for publication. I never would have thought of even trying to attempt it had I not come across this incredible site, full of incredible people men, women, black, white, Orange, who cares it doesn’t matter on this site everyone is treated with the same courtesy and respect whether you’ve just started reading about the Civil War and stumbled upon this site or weather you are a head of a park and have been for 20 years. I want to thank everyone who found, organized, or maintains this site in any way because you have created something magical. So thank you again and I look forward to engaging every one of you in debates no matter how silly you make me look, lol. I would also like to thank all the members who belongs to this site like me who abide by the rules and the suggestions of the organizers to have a different opinion to come to your own conclusion but always no matter what respect the other person. God bless you all and I look forward to getting the next article in my inbox.
