Saving History Saturday: Preservation Updates from Georgia

The Georgia Battlefields Association (GBA) is currently assisting The American Battlefield Trust with a preservation project at Resaca.

Founded in 1995, as a private, non-profit organization, GBA has worked with governments, and non-governmental preservation organizations to help with Civil War preservation efforts throughout the state.

In other preservation news from Georgia:

On May 13, 2025, Georgia Governor Brian Kamp signed the Vince Dooley Battlefield Trust Fund Act into law. The Fund will help assist in the acquisition of battlefield land in the state of Georgia.

Vince Dooley rose to prominence as the coach of the University of Georgia football team, as well as being the athletic director. Coach Dooley had a long-standing love of history, and was a long-time member of the Georgia Battlefields Association, as well as serving on the board of trustees of the American Battlefield Trust

A funding source for the fund was not included in the original legislation. The Georgia General Assembly, which convenes for their new session this month, is tasked with appropriating the funds to be used to fulfill the important work of battlefield preservation through the fund.
