10,000 Posts: Caroline Davis Dips into the ECW Archives

I am sure I am not the only one to say this, but it was difficult picking 3 of my all-time favorite posts, and I am sure I am forgetting about some that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading over the years. However, I did my best to narrow it down.

The first is “Lincoln Pardons Turkey, But Not General Porterby Meg Groeling, posted on November 23, 2011. I miss her and her posts. They always made for an interesting read as well as a few chuckles! While I know most talk about her War Chicken post, I am however a bit partial to pardoning a turkey!

Second on my list is just about anything from Dwight Hughes! When I first started writing for ECW, I was pretty much a loner when it came to the navies! However, Dwight took on the navy role and ran with it. His knowledge on the subject never ceased to amaze me and oftentimes, if I am working on something navy-related, I look up any posts he may have written about it. Much like with Meg, I had trouble coming up with just one of his posts I enjoyed the most, but I think I can safely say that his posts on the Mississippi River Squadron, Part One and Part Two, posted in July 2018, are up there!

Lastly, my third pick is actually the first one that came to mind when Chris Mackowski sent out the initial email and it was written by none other than Chris himself. The post  “Remembering 9/11 and the Lessons from Antietam,” posted on September 12, 2011. 9/11 was a pivotal moment during my childhood. Even then, I began relating the event to other past events, recognizing it as my generation’s “Pearl Harbor.” While I don’t think I will ever forget that day, I realize that, just as Chris says at the end of the post, “We are doomed to forget”—but perhaps we can make a small difference in remembering and keeping our past alive.

As for my favorite posts I have written:

The Less Famous Lee, posted on January 11, 2014. This is one of my favorites because of the research I got to do when writing it. I was working at George Washington Birthplace at the time and went to Stratford at least once a month! I got to know the staff at Stratford well and greatly enjoyed my time there!

“A Poet’s Perspective” Series. While it’s not one specific post, the small series with Herman Melville is by far one of my favorites I have done (I hope to add to it once I finish up with Morgan’s Raiders). I’m including the link to the first post I did covering one of his poems about the Civil War.
