My three favorites:

Separate Roads to Petersburg: The Fractured High Command, April 1865 by Edward Alexander, posted on August 18, 2015

A Profession Bound by Truth by Joe Ricci, posted on September 4, 2025 as part of our Ethics & Issues Series

How Much Did Soldiers Think About Slavery by Evan Portman, posted on April 16, 2025

All three are extremely well-written and beyond just a standard narrative, offer deep thoughts and leave me thinking deeply. Joe’s piece especially as we find ourselves in a new age of dealing with fact and fiction and “fake-news” and the frightening rise of AI.

My two favorites pieces that I’ve written:

Civil War Myth Busting: The Fictional Confederate Irish Brigade at Fredericksburg, posted January 7, 2021

John Buford, Billy Burke, and the Decision that United Them Across Nearly 140 Years, posted on on September 11, 2024

The fictional myth of a Confederate Irish Brigade continues to sprout up, and I hope my article dispels it even a little. On the other hand, the story of Billy Burke’s sacrifice on 9/11 as a member of the New York City Fire Department, and his enduring love of history, stuck with me. It resonated so deeply, I actually wear his name on a bracelet every day I go to work—I’d like to think that through Burke’s love of history and the Civil War, having his name on a battlefield means that he, too, is still there and being remembered.
