bUnless otherwise noted, the date from which seniority was determined for the indicated rank (the “to take rank from” date) was March 16, 1861.
cIn the US Army, surgeons had the rank of major, and assistant surgeons had the rank of captain or first lieutenant. All medical officers in the regular Confederate army had been in the US Army and, with the exception of Francis Sorrel, left US service shortly before their joining the CS army. Two other physicians formerly in the US Army—Robert Southgate and William A. Carswell—were medical officers in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States (PACS) but evidently not in the regular CS army.
dAppointment as assistant surgeon in the regular CS army took rank from March 16, 1861. Promoted to surgeon, to take rank from October 4, 1862, to fill the slot of Moore, who had been promoted from acting surgeon general (with the rank of surgeon) to surgeon general.
eAppointment as assistant surgeon in the regular CS army took rank from March 16, 1861. Promoted to surgeon, to take rank from October 4, 1862, to fill the slot of Langworthy, who had died.
fSorrel resigned from the US Army on June 27, 1856. His seven years of US service gave him the least seniority among full surgeons in the regular CS Army.
gAll assistant surgeons in the regular CS army were also full surgeons in the PACS.
