All medical officers in the regular Confederate army had been in the US Army and, with the exception of Francis Sorrel, left US service shortly before their joining the CS army. Two other physicians formerly in the US Army—Robert Southgate and William A. Carswell—were medical officers in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States (PACS) but evidently not in the regular CS army.
