Lee’s Headquarters at Gettysburg

On a recent trip to Gettysburg, I took the liberty of passing by Lee’s Headquarters. As many of you know, the Civil War Trust purchased the property in 2014. Restoration of the site is currently under way. The restaurant building nearby is gone while demolition continues on the hotel. A barbed wire fence surrounds the site, although some sections had come down the previous night due to high winds (which incidentally took down a cedar tree across the Baltimore Pike, knocking out power lines and the electricity at the hotel where my wife and I stayed).

I took the picture below and wanted to share it with our readers.

  1. IS NOT CIVIL WAR TRUST GREAT LOVE EM NEXT TIME IN TOWN GO TO COSTNER ST AND SEE THE NEW MURAL FOR THE 154 NY WORTH THE VISIT WILL BE GOING DOWN FOR ADOPT A MONUMENT PROGRAM WITH ECHOS THRU TIME MUSEUM THE 23 MAY

  2. It’s not barbed wire actually, it is a cyclone fence, but we take your point. The digging pits and asbestos are a safety hazard, tis all. The place to appreciate this restoration is from the Reynolds battery monument on Reynolds (no relation) Avenue. The view east toward the final Union defensive line on Seminary Ridge — the removal of the hotel is a shocking improvement.
