Virtual Symposium 2020: The Forgotten Flank at Gettysburg
Today, we’re pleased to share Dan Welch’s talk from the 2020 ECW Virtual Symposium. Dan, who spends his summer as a battlefield interpreter for Gettysburg National Military Park, gave a talk about the fighting at Culp’s Hill: “‘Where all so well did their duty’: George Sears Greene’s Brigade at Gettysburg.”
“Culp’s Hill is so overlooked and underappreciated today,” Dan says. “Its story is just as dramatic, climactic, and important as Little Round Top and Pickett’s Charge. I always enjoy the opportunity to share the actions of July 2, 1863, at Culp’s Hill with new audiences.”
Dan, as one of the coordinators of our annual symposium, was more disappointed than most by the need to postpone this year’s event, so the virtual symposium served as a bit of a salve for him. “The symposium, virtual or not, is a great opportunity to talk history with other voices and interests,” he says. “I enjoyed this opportunity yet again this year at our virtual event.”

On my first visit to Gettysburg, more years ago than I care to remember, I had the privilege of a very experienced Battlefield Guide taking my son and I on a tour that spent significant time on Culp’s Hill. What a great way to begin to learn about the battle. My son has never forgotten that visit and the amazing courage of the troops who defended that hill.
