Washington County Announces Boonsborough Museum of History Joins the Civil War Trails

This month, the Boonsborough Museum of History joined the multi-state Civil War Trails (CWT) program. The program directs travelers to over 1,500 sites across six states. This will not only help visitors better understand the skirmish which swirled through the streets of Boonsboro in 1862 but promote the Museum internationally.

“I cannot tell you how pleased we are with the CWT sign. It really pops out on our street front,” said Charles Schwalbe, a member of the Museum’s Board of Directors. The project was made possible by the Museum who provided research, the draft text, and inspiration for the signage as well as the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau (Visit Hagerstown), Civil War Trails, Inc. and the Maryland Office of Tourist Development.

Daniel P Spedden, President of Visit Hagerstown said, “We are proud of our association with the Civil War Trails program. Our visitors rely on CW Trails to put them in the footsteps of the generals, soldiers, citizens, ancestors and the enslaved people who found themselves in the midst of this Civil War.”

Visit Hagerstown provided the funding for the project. Additionally, the Maryland Office of Tourist Development also partners with Civil War Trails, Inc. to produce the popular Civil War Trails brochures which are distributed at welcome centers and to visitors from around the world.

The new sign helps tell the story of the skirmish which took place on September 15, 1862 during the famous Antietam campaign. It is hard to imagine in such a beautiful downtown as it is today but one solider recalled, “The content in the streets of town was fierce; foes shot at his men from the windows of houses.” A map on the sign helps visitors better understand how the fighting took place. Visit the new sign located at the Museum, 113 North Main St., Boonsboro, Maryland 21713. Don’t forget to snap a #signselfie and post it along with #civilwartrails @visitmaryland.
