Stacking Arms: An Introduction

April 2025 starts the 160th anniversary of the surrenders that culminated in the Civil War’s end. Here at Emerging Civil War, we thought we would commemorate that anniversary by focusing on surrenders in general.

Over the next several weeks, our authors will delve into different scenarios, case studies, and examples of Civil War era surrenders. They will include surrenders on land and at sea, armies and forts, those deemed important to the war, and those perhaps only critical to the soldier involved.

Our hope is that our readers will gain a greater appreciation of the complexities of surrendering, while also commemorating the war’s conclusion.
