In March, Maine at War rode for a bit with the 1st Maine Cavalry and discovered that a habitual drunk could wind up commanding the regiment! Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson suddenly made the rounds in the 1st Maine Cav’s camp, and one trooper left his mark in Bangor after the war.

March 5, 2025: 1st Maine Cavalry veteran left a Queen Anne’s record in Bangor

Describing his occupation as “joiner” (carpenter), Albert L. McDonald joined the 1st Maine Cavalry Regiment and settled in Bangor after the war. He built places around the city, and one house probably was the one into which he and his wife moved.

March 12, 2025: A poignant gift for the 3rd Maine Infantry’s colonel

The 3rd Maine Infantry Regiment conducted a dress parade on Saturday, October 3, 1863. Colonel Moses B. Lakeman knew the ceremony by heart, but he did not anticipate what happened next.

Reverend Benjamin F. Tefft, chaplain for the 1st Maine Cavalry Regiment, noticed that a few officers guzzled liquor, and the alcohol affected their job performances (in his opinion). Then one such inebriate moved up in the commissioned ranks.
