“Lorena”, ever since I first heard it on the Civil War album from the Life History of the United States series, which were in my high school library’s spoken word LPs. This was a more mournful rendition than that typically heard by artists like John Hartford (as heard on Burns’ Civil War series, and soundtrack albums. I’ve obtained the vinyl album and will finally have it digitized – it is out of print, and as far as I know has never been reissued or streamed.
Second place, would be Kathy Mattea’s cover of “The Vacant Chair”.
