Frederick Douglass. My interest in him precedes mine in the Civil War. He gave his last public address at my alma mater (West Chester University, then WC Normal School) in 1895.
My favorite figures are probably the Rock of Chickamauga George H. Thomas and the Soldier’s Friend Oliver P. Morton.
Collectively, my 25 ancestors who served in Pennsylvania and North Carolina regiments in three different armies, and left me three spectacular diaries, one from each army; especially my two great-great-grandfathers and their brothers, who lived out their old age in my grandparents’ homes when they were children, so my grandparents saw them with their eyes and heard their voices, and collected their stories and artifacts, which they passed on to me.
