On Memorial Day, 1936, family members placed flowers at the grave of Herman Smith of the Thirty-first New York, a Civil War veteran who had died two years earlier.

For years, schoolchildren decorated Fredericksburg’s graves with flags on Memorial Day. In 1934, fourth-grade students from Lafayette Elementary School did the honors.

Today, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have taken over the duty, not only decorating the graves with flowers but also with luminaria.
