ECW Week in Review Dec. 17-24

Holiday Greetings from all of us at ECW! The week before Christmas is always busy and the same can be said here. We’ve had a number of great posts this week related to Christmas and other subjects, including the recent ECW Symposium and our upcoming site migration. Meg Groeling shared a holiday photograph piece. Dan Davis wrote about Christmas 1862 for the mounted forces of the Army of Northern Virginia and Army of the Potomac. Sarah wrote about a popular Christmas-time activity in the 1860s, ice-skating. We also put together a post with links to some of our past Christmas pieces.

Dan continued his series on Wade Hampton’s operations in the early winter of 1862. You may catch up on the entire series here. He also shared Preservation News on a recent effort launched by the Civil War Trust at Cold Harbor.

Sarah also shared a piece related to our first release in the “Engaging the Civil War” series, Turning Points of the Civil War, with Southern Illinois University Press, as did Chris Mackowski. C-SPAN 3 continued their coverage of the presentations from the Fourth Annual Emerging Civil War Symposium. Ryan Quint recently attended a commemoration of the Battle of Dranesville.

Kevin Pawlak wrote about his and Rob Orrison’s efforts in tracing the Maryland Campaign and George B. McClellan for their upcoming book in the Emerging Civil War Series, To Hazard All: A Guide to the Maryland Campaign, 1862.

Guest author Jon-Erik Gilot also wrote about McClellan during the first year of the war. We also had a guest piece from Wally Rueckel and Mike Powell from the Brunswick Civil War Roundtable in Southport, North Carolina on Civil War Roundtables.
