  1. He was hated by many, but brought freedom to all. A highly skilled politician and supreme mater of the written and spoken word. He embraced our founding principles and sought rapid healing from the war. He severely internalized the progress of the war was endlessly frustrated to find leadership. He served his nation while dealing with endless personal tragedy and a spouse suffering from mental illness and erratic behavior. He possessed incredible strength of spirit to endure all this.

  2. True enough, he does, but no less unfortunate for his country. He would be replaced by a bigot and a visionless president. Reconstruction was anything but and black people would not join the ranks of citizenry for another century.
