While it’s easy to stereotype soldiers as “Billy Yank” and “Johnny Reb” or “the Yankee horde” or “the bedraggled Confederates”—or any number of other ways—it’s important to understand the sheer variety that underlies those simplistic characterizations. Last spring, Matt Stanley dove into those demographics more deeply to reveal some surprising diversity among the Union army.
