Antietam and the Emerging Civil War Series

Kevin with HazardWhile there are, of course, plenty of good books out there about Antietam, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that the Emerging Civil War Series added two great Antietam books to the line-up this year, including one that’s hot off the Savas Beatie presses.

Earlier this year, we were proud to announce the release of That Field of Blood: The Battle of Antietam by Dan Vermilya. Dan, a licensed battlefield guide at Antietam and former historian there, now works for Gettysburg National Military Park at its Eisenhower Unit.

And just last week, the latest ECWS book shipped from the printer: To Hazard All: A Guide to the Maryland Campaign, 1862 by Rob Orrison and Kevin Pawlak. (Kevin was so excited to get his box of books, we asked him to send us a picture!)

To Hazard All follows in the footsteps of our other campaign guides, No Turning Back: A Guide to the Overland Campaign by Bert Dunkerly, Don Pfanz, and David Ruth, and Last Road North: A Guide to the Gettysburg Campaign by Rob Orrison and Dan Welch.

Hazard follows Robert E. Lee’s army into Maryland, and then follows the Federal response, with tours that also cover the siege of Harper’s Ferry, the battle of South Mountain, and the armies’ movement back south after the battle. The book takes advantage of our great partnership with Civil War Trails, and it provides some lesser-known and out-of-the-way stops that only guys like Rob and Kevin know from years of doing tours.

We’ll have more details to come about To Hazard All, so stay tuned. In the meantime, what are some of your other favorite Antietam books?

1 Response to Antietam and the Emerging Civil War Series

  1. I am looking forward to reading Kevin’s new book. My favorite book on Antietam is
James V. Murfin’s The Gleam of Bayonets: The Battle of Antietam and Robert E. Lee’s Maryland Campaign, September 1862. This was the first book I read on the Maryland Campaign and it is still my personal favorite.
