We’re kicking off our list of the most-read posts from 2019. Coming in at #10: A.P. Hill’s Death Wish?: The Problem with Using Quotes by Edward Alexander (June 13, 2018).

“Some have speculated that the reckless nature of A. P. Hill’s final journey meant that Hill may have been going out in a blaze of glory—a suicide by Yankee,” Alexander says. “As proof, they quote Hill saying less than a week before his death that he did not want to survive a Confederate defeat.” However, Alexander warns that historians should be wary about reading too much into that “supposed statement.”
