6) Florida’s “Cow Cavalry” by Phill Greenwalt (Jan. 4, 2018)

What the state lacked in manpower, it made up for it with another living, breathing, moveable force, Greenwalt said: cattle. To protect those vital assets, some 900 men enlisted in the 1st Battalion Florida Special Cavalry. “Comprised mostly of men that were on either end of the spectrum of military age—either too young or two old to fight—” Greenwalt explained, “they served the Confederate war effort by joining what would be referred to as the ‘Cow Cavalry.'”
