ECW Presents Stevenson Award to C-SPAN

C-SPAN AWARD.jpgEmerging Civil War recently presented its Brig. Gen. Thomas Greely Stevenson Award for 2019 to C-SPAN.

The Stevenson Award is presented to an individual or organization in recognition of their outstanding service to ECW.

For the past five years, C-SPAN has taped all or portions of each ECW Symposium.

During the award presentation, ECW Editor-in-Chief Chris Mackowski asked the assembled audience how many of them had watched an ECW presentation on C-SPAN. All hands rose. “And I can’t tell you how many times I, or one of my ECW colleagues, has gone to speak somewhere and have had people come up to us and say, ‘I saw you on C-SPAN,’” Mackowski added. “The reach C-SPAN has given ECW has been invaluable.”

C-SPAN’s series on the Civil War is part of American History TV, which runs on C-SPAN 3 for 48 hours each weekend starting at 8 a.m. Saturdays. American History TV also airs on all holidays and in prime time when Congress is out of session. Once their Civil War programming debuts on TV, it then also become available on their website, Since American History TV officially launched in 2011, they have aired more than 600 programs related to the Civil War—including dozens of ECW segments.

C-SPAN and ECW share a common mission, said C-SPAN producer Russell Logan, who accepted the award. “We like to give a platform for new voices,” he said.

Watching Civil war Lectures on C-SPAN is what lead me to seek out more on attending Civil war lectures. I then discovered a Civil War Round Table in my area and joined. C-SPAN fills in the gaps between our (PSCWRT) round table lectures and my summer tours of battlefields. Well deserved award for C-SPAN !!!

KUDOs to both ECW and C-SPAN History for their missions and efforts! My sense is the value of C-SPAN to ECW and enhanced Civil War scholarship is priceless. I’m particularly impressed by the broad scope of topics covered, focusing on not just battles and leaders, but also potitical issues, the role of slavery in the war, and international issues, to name just a few. Personally, both my knowledge and key issues of interest in the Civil War have been expanded considerably by the creative focus of both ECW and C-SPAN History… Thank You!
