Saving History Saturday: American Battlefield Protection Program to Help Save 50 Acres at Cold Harbor
Just before the start of the year, the American Battlefield Protection Program – the arm of the National Park Service to preserve hallowed ground – awarded nearly $440 million to save vital acreage at the Cold Harbor battlefield.
Just over 50 acres will be saved via easement from growing development in Hanover County, Virginia. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, in partnership with the American Battlefield Trust and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, received this grant.
This major grant announcement comes just weeks after Congress passed its FY2019 Appropriations bill, which included $18 million in funding to support battlefield preservation through the American Battlefield Protection Program.
That should read $440 thousand — not million — for the grant. Regardless, three cheers for ABT and ABPP!
