Saving History Saturday: Big News For Grant Cottage

In a recent virtual meeting, the Department of the Interior’s National Historic Landmark Committee unanimously approved the recommendation to make Grant Cottage a national historic landmark. The decision awaits approval from the Secretary of the Interior, David Bernhardt.

It’s been a six year process and wait for Friends of Grant Cottage, hoping to add the additional recognition to the historic state park designation already given by New York. Once the national landmark status is approved, the site become eligible for federal historic preservation grants which are needed to help ensure the safety of the structure. Congress members from both political parties have spoken in favor of adding the additional preservation steps to Grant Cottage, recognizing it as a location of significance and memory in Civil War, presidential, and literary history.

Grant Cottage—the location atop Mt. McGregor in New York state—where Ulysses S. Grant spent his final days and finished the final chapters of his memoirs has experienced a significant increase in visitors this year even with the pandemic precautions and limited tours. The renewed interest is attributed to History Channel’s miniseries, Grant, which aired earlier in 2020.
