The first segment airs on C-SPAN 3’s “American History TV” this weekend: “Lee’s Greatest Victory, Lee’s Greatest Defeat: The Battle of Chancellorsville” by ECW co-founder Kris White. The program airs Saturday evening at 6 p.m. EDT. It re-airs Sunday morning at 4 a.m. EDT.

Lee was an excellent tactician but his actions sometimes were uncharacteristic and had bad outcomes. He was known to be in physical pain, perhaps from a noted fall from his horse and possibly other reasons. For pain he reportedly was a user of laudenum, a popular pain remedy of the time which contained opium alkaloids, including morphine and codeine. Some students of Lee’s military career during the Civil War believe that his uncharacteristic actions may have resulted from excessive use of laudenum.
