ECW Weekender: “50 Days on the Mountain” with Grant Cottage

Grant Cottage State Historic Site atop Mt. McGregor in Wilton, NY, has been doing some exceptional coverage this year of Ulysses S. Grant’s time atop the mountain, thanks to operations manager Ben Kemp.

Ben has been producing a live video series called “50 Days on the Mountain,” which appears on Grant Cottage’s Facebook page. Ben draws on newspaper accounts from all over the country to help tell the story not only of Grant’s time at the small cottage but also national reaction to Grant’s deteriorating health. Grant traveled to Mt. McGregor to escape the summer heat of Manhattan and finish writing his personal memoirs; at the time, he was in the final stages of terminal throat cancer.

Ben’s first video commemorated Grant’s arrival at the Cottage on June 16, 1885. You can watch it here. If you have time, follow along for the full fifty days on Grant Cottage’s Facebook page.

  1. Is there an way to watch Ben’s videos without Facebook? I was only able to watch the first five minutes and then told I had to create an account.
