Year in Review: New Books

While the ongoing pandemic certainly put a dent in our efforts during 2020, Emerging Civil War and our publishers worked hard to make up for lost time. This year brought no less than ten new books, and even a new series!

For our flagship Emerging Civil War Series, published by Savas Beatie, 2021 saw the release of the following titles…

Embattled Capital: A Guide to Richmond During the Civil War by Robert M. Dunkerly and Doug Crenshaw

Unlike Anything That Ever Floated: The Monitor and Virginia and the Battle of Hampton Roads, March 8 – 9, 1862 by Dwight Sturtevant Hughes

A Mortal Blow to the Confederacy: The Fall of New Orleans, 1862 by Mark F. Bielski

Grant’s Left Hook: The Bermuda Hundred Campaign, May 5 – June 7, 1864 by Sean Michael Chick

Passing Through the Fire: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain in the Civil War by Brian F. Swartz

Lincoln Comes to Gettysburg by Bradley M. & Linda I. Gottfried

We have a robust slate of ECWS books scheduled for 2022 release, including Cedar Mountain, the Peninsula Campaign, P.G.T. Beauregard bio, William T. Sherman bio, John Brown’s Raid, Secessionville, Gettysburg Day 2, and more!

This year also saw the release of a new series celebrating Emerging Civil War’s tenth anniversary! Filled with some of our favorite stories and fresh perspectives from the blog, and even lecture and podcast transcripts, The Emerging Civil War 10th Anniversary Series, published by Savas Beatie, currently includes the following titles:

The Summer of ’63: Gettysburg – Edited by Chris Mackowski and Dan Welch

The Summer of ’63: Vicksburg & Tullahoma – Edited by Chris Mackowski and Dan Welch

Additional 10th Anniversary releases in the coming year include Grant vs. Lee, the War in the Western Theater, the Civil War & Memory, Civil War Navy, and Fallen Leaders.

This year also saw the publication of several books in our Engaging the Civil War Series, published by our friends at Southern Illinois University Press. Designed to adopt the sensibility and accessibility of public history while adhering to the standards of academic scholarship, the series has grown to seven volumes. New releases in 2021 included:

The Bonds of War: A Story of Immigrants and Espirit de Corps in Company C, 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry by Diana L. Dretske

Matchless Organization: The Confederate Army Medical Department by Guy R. Hasegawa

As always, our efforts would not be nearly as successful without the boundless support of our readership. If you keep reading them, we’ll keep writing them! Thank you for a fantastic 2021!
