ECW Weekender: Lee’s Mill Park
Much of the Warwick River defenses and trenches on the Virginia Peninsula from 1862 have disappeared under modern roads, golf courses, or housing tracts. However, there are a few excellent places to see earthworks that have the bonus of preservation and interpretive signage. One of those sites is Lee’s Mill Park which is also a location on Civil War Trails’ journey across the Peninsula.
In early March, I visited Lee’s Mill Park and took some photos of the signs and earthworks. Come for a walk…without the bugs!
If you want to visit this historic site, Lee’s Mill Park is located at 280-310 Rivers Ridge Cir, Newport News, VA 23608 and is open from sunrise to sunset.
It’s also not far from Newport News Park which has other great earthworks! (Read more about the Civil War and Newport News Park here.)
I regret I missed the opportunity to see these and other nearby sites when I was stationed at Fort Eustis in Newport News. Thanks for posting the excellent pictures.
