Happy Thanksgiving from Emerging Civil War

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving! We’re grateful for your interest in history and for being part of our journey to sharing emerging scholarship.

It’s been 160 years since Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation for a day of thanksgiving which is often seen as an important step to the nationally observed holiday.

“I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, …to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving….and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.”
