  1. Fascinating. I saw the film ‘A time out of war’ as a 12 year old which depicted these events.
    It was one of the thinks that fired my interest in the ACW that has lasted a life time.

  2. Interesting reading, enhanced by the artists’ sketches and the photographs. I wonder if the trench warfare in Europe in the Twentieth Century produced any limited incidences of amity and short term peace

  3. Great article. I think there are many many examples of such fraternization during the war. I know of a fair few from the Petersburg Campaign; several appear in Trudeau’s well-known book “The Last Citadel.” Chapter 14 is even called “When we weren’t killing each other we were the best of friends”.
