Question of the Week: After Cleburne, who was the best Confederate general lost at Franklin?

This week marks the battle of Franklin 160. Besides Patrick Cleburne, which Confederate general that fell at Franklin had the best combat reputation?

  1. that’s a tough question if you’re not an Army of Tennessee expert … so, I am going with the general officer with the best name — States Rights Gist.

  2. Probably Granbury. However, if we consider “lost” to include wounded (and therefore not permanently lost), then it’s Frank Cockrell of the Missouri Brigade.

  3. A very difficult question, Hiram B. Granbury from Texas was captured as a major at Ft. Donelson. Exchange fought during the Vicksburg campaign where his Texans did outstanding work. Wounded at Chickamauga and led a brigade after Missionary Ride where he was commended by Cleburne. Outstanding at Pickett’s Mill. Then you have John Adams. West Point trained. Commended multiple times for his service in the Western theater. Especially conspicuous during the Atlanta campaign for his personal bravery. Both Irish. Both excellent fighters. My vote goes to Cleburne.
