The Franklin Battlefield’s Newest Monument

On a recent trip to Franklin, I had the chance to see a recent addition to the battlefield that honors soldiers from the great state of Texas.

The monument caught my eye because it’s patterned after the iconic series of ten monuments erected by the state on Civil War battlefields for the Centennial. (The closest one to me is at the spot of the “Lee to the Rear” incident at the Wilderness.) The monuments are all made of pink Texas granite, adorned on the front a “lone star” encircled by laurels.

The new Texas monument at Franklin, located at Carter Hill Battlefield Park, was erected and sponsored by the Battle of Franklin Trust, Franklin’s Charge, and the Texas Historical Commission. They dedicated the monument on May 13, 2024, which means this anniversary—the battle’s 160th—will be the monument’s first on the battlefield.

Just thought I’d share:

With thanks to Franklin of Battle Trust Historian Joe Ricci for funneling some extra info my way for this post.
