2024 Year in Review: Symposium Recap

We celebrated the 10th Annual Emerging Civil War Symposium at Stevenson Ridge in August. It was an exciting time for us. Dual keynotes from Jonathan Noyalas and Brian Steel Wills, plus a special appearance by Curt Fields at Ulysses S. Grant, topped a fantastic line-up of tours and speakers. We offered a great wrap-up post of photos that you can check out here.

Perhaps most exciting to us is that we have five attendees who have been to every since one of our symposia. We want to give a special shout-out (from second-to-left) to Mike Burns, Terry Kekic, Paul & Janine Stier, and Ed Flanagan. ECW’s Chris Mackowski (far left) has also attended all ten, one of only two ECW folks who’ve done so. (Can you name the other?)

Those of us who were there Friday night gathered for a quick “family” photo at the end of the evening. These are twenty-four of the folks who’ve written for us over the years–to be honest, we’ve lost count of the full number! One of the things we like so much as a community of historians is getting together and spending time with each other and with our readers. For us, that’s always the best part of any Symposium!

Early-bird tickets for the 11th Annual Emerging Civil War Symposium, Aug. 1–3, 2025, are still available through December 31. Click here for details!

  1. I’m going to guess that Daniel Davis is the other ECW member besides C-Mac that has attended all 10 Symposiums.

  2. Not sure but what I do know is that Paul & Janine Stier were super cool and very welcoming. They let us rookies join their table and made us feel at home. As my first time attending the Symposium, I am still overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion that everyone shared over the entire weekend. Looking forward to making the trip again!
