J.E.B. Stuart. Not only did he have a good beard, it served him well, since at West Point his perceived poor looks (especially a weak chin) earned him the nickname “Beauty.” The beard solved that problem and in that sense if nothing else, was the “best” beard of the War.
Among Confederates, Lafayette McLaws.
Among Federals, George Crook
I think Jeb Stuart’s beard did the most for his appearance.
I have to go with Albert Jenkins.
The 2nd Division of First Corps commander, Brig General, John C. Robinson. He was labeled as the “hairiest man in the AOP”.
I think the best Civil War beard was Gen. George Crook.
Tom Berenger
Major General William “Little Billy” Mahone … maybe not the best beard, but definitely the coolest a la Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top.

Alpheus Williams for the win
.E.B.Stuart or Robert E. Lee
Alpheus Williams!
President James Buchanan.
How do we upload photos?
I think Robert E Lee. He kept it trimmed and it looked very distinguished on him. Wild beards don’t do it for me.
