Symposium Spotlight: The Battle of Franklin and Reckoning with the Past

Welcome back to our spotlight series, highlighting speakers and topics for our upcoming symposium. Over the coming weeks, we will continue previewing of our speaker’s presentations for the 2025 Emerging Civil War Symposium. This week we feature Eric Jacobson’s topic.

Autumn brings death to the flower gardens at Carnton.

The Battle of Franklin and Reckoning with the Past

Eric will focus on the Battle of Franklin and how it was almost completely lost to time.  He will then turn to the modern reclamation movement and what it means to reclaim a battlefield in the 21st century as the country reckons with the legacies of slavery, the war, how the United States was nearly destroyed, Reconstruction, and the Lost Cause.
