Question of the Week: What battleground are you planning to visit this year?

With summer upon us, now is a good time for many to visit Civil War battlegrounds. What battleground are you planning to visit this year?

  1. Have already been fortunate enough to visit several already, next stop is Cold Harbor, also a trip to Culpeper Battlefield Park later this year!

  2. This year I have trips planned to Fredericksburg, Vicksburg and Buckland.

  3. In a few days I’ll be at the little known Calhoun County Texas skirmish sites (Fall 1863-Winter 1864) in an effort to hopefully create some Texas Historical Markers.

  4. Recently visited Ball’s Bluff for the first time. Hope to make Sharpsburg/Antietam later this year.

  5. In a few days I plan to visit skirmish sites in Calhoun County, Texas involved in the Union Army occupation during the fall 1863-winter 1864. My objective will be to hopefully create some Texas Historical Markers for the sites sometime in the future.

  6. I conducted a tour of the Shiloh battlefield with a group from the Tampa Bay Civil War Roundtable in May. We also toured battlefields at 2nd Battle of Corinth and Brice’s Crossroads. Taking another group to Gettysburg in September.

  7. Gettysburg in 2 weeks. A tour of the 12th Corps movements during the three-day battle.

  8. Gettysburg every October for sure. Probably Monocacy as well. Hopefully, Antietam and Harpers Ferry.

  9. In a few weeks, with HRCWRT, we will visit Pamplin Park on the Petersburg Battlefield. Also, on June 7th, we will visit Fort Pocahontas on the James River. This is the site of a little known battle that pitted the Confederate Cavalry under Fitzhugh Lee against a USCT unit that was tasked with defending an earthen work constructed to protect the Federal supply line during the Petersburg campaign in 1864. The USCT successfully defended their position and this action helped to solidify the reputation that black troops could and would fight. Unfortunately the site is open only for two days on the 7th and 8th of June. So if anyone would want the visit this small but significant action, for a small fee, you can see the well preserved earthworks and a reenactment of the event this coming weekend.

  10. Having recently finished Tim Smith’s books about Grant’s assaults at Vicksburg, and the Inland campaign, I’m ready for a return visit to Vicksburg, Raymond and Champion’s hill. Later in the year, a road trip to Perryville is in the works.

  11. We were just in New Orleans but didn’t have enough time to check out the C8vil War sites in and around the city, though our cruise did stop at some places north of there. So we’d like to go back there and see the Civil War and other sites in and around New Orleans itself. We might do that in the Fall.

  12. We went out to visit our Richmond family in March and we visited Petersburg and got to listen to a NPS talk at the Crater.

  13. I have been to Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg already this year. I am going to Gettysburg this weekend, and will visit South Mountain and Antietam closer to the fall. I’ve never been to Monocacy. I need to put that on the list.

  14. I’ve been to Spotsylvania, Monocacy, Petersburg, going to Pamplin Park, and Gettysburg a couple times

  15. Back to Gettysburg to visit Little Round Top which was closed on my first visit. Also loved the Cyclorama so will make sure to see that again. Will also revisit Antietam and Harpers Ferry.

  16. Seven Days! I have unpublished documents that were confirmed by a recent archaeological dig that will change how the history of one of the battles was fought, so I’m eager to see the field for myself!
