Question of the Week: What Civil War city would you want to go back and visit?

Keeping with the Symposium’s cities theme, if you could go back in time and tour one city during the Civil War, what city would you want to explore, and what day would you want to go back to for your visit?

  1. New Orleans – I had ancestors who experienced Union occupation. And a town like Brookhaven, Mississippi, which unexpectedly experienced Grierson’s Raid.

  2. Alexandria VA. Worked there 1986 to 2008 and saw significant changes & the civil war era remains and and would like to see what the city looked like to include the forts.

    1. I had the same thought. Seeing Quake City before it became what it did – the place where guys like Sherman and Halleck played a large role – would be fascinating. And getting a feel for how the war was viewed a few thousand miles away would be equally fascinating. Of course, we’d have to deal with the “gold standard” dispute … LOL

  3. Indianola or Galveston Texas because both were large cities that were completely obliterated by hurricanes and it would be exciting to see these cities in all their Glory since photos are extremely rare unlike some other cities which were heavily photographed.

  4. I would like to go to New Orleans (any day, any year) in the weeks after Butler took control of the city. I want to see a Massachusetts Yankee appalled at the infrastructure inadequacy in the city and then set out to do something about it. I believe New Orleans lived off the Union-led improvements to drainage and secure water supply for decades after the Civil War ended.

  5. Montreal where escaped Confederate POWs gathered to launch thr raid into Vermont in retaliation for the total war in Georgia and the Shenandoah Valley
