Just Shot: Jekyll Island, Georgia
Jekyll Island, Georgia – one of my favorite haunts. This is where the last slave ship, The Wanderer, arrived in Georgia to unload 409 future slaves-to-be so they could be auctioned off, mostly in Savannah and Atlanta. The ship arrived on November 28, 1858 and was soon seized by Federal authorities. Although the international slave trade had long been outlawed, the arrests netted no convictions; instead, the jury acquitted the ship’s owner and captain.
This image is a sunrise taken a few years ago. It was a stunning late-autumn morning – a chilly morning for an island just a score miles or so from Florida. This beach is called Driftwood Beach, a famous “boneyard beach” with the remains of many dead, petrified live oaks dotting the six-mile-long island. If you ever get a chance to go there, I highly recommend it.
Breathtaking photograph of the bare tree under the sunset!
