Framing History: Manassas in Winter
While you don’t see a lot of Civil War images of camps, soldiers, or battlefields in snow, some do exist! Check out this blog post from 2025 by Brian Swartz for some favorites. https://emergingcivilwar.com/2025/01/20/winters-cold-and-storms-in-civil-war-art/
I love the way a snowfall blankets a battlefield in snow, and because I live close to Manassas National Battlefield Park, you’ll often find me there, cameras in tow, after (or during) a snowstorm to capture it. The stillness of the battlefield in those chilled, silent moments are compellingly beautiful. Here are a few of the favorite shots I’ve captured of Manassas in winter.

Thank you for sharing these photos!
What beautiful, serene shots, Melissa, thanks for sharing !
Beautiful images.
And such an appropriate time to share your images as we attempt to thaw out and resume our normal winter activities.
Winter is my favorite time to visit battlefields because the trees are bare, the under brush has been knocked down and no bugs!
