    “Cavalry Crossing the Ford” by Walt Whitman
    “Lines on a Confederate Note” by Major Sidney Alroy Jones

  3. Among my favorites are those by James Madison Bell, an African-American activist who fought through poetry. Check out “The Black Man’s Wrongs” and “The Day and the War.”
