I’ve been seeing some things about Hawaii’s status and actions visa vis the American Civil War. It was not a state then, in fact, it wasn’t even an American territory yet. But military units were raised on the islands, and some of those fought on the mainland in the War. Most Hawaiians who ‘signed up’ fought for the Union. I don’t claim to know a lot about this subject but I am trying to find out more about it. Hopefully I will be visiting Hawaii soon enough and I will see what I can learn from ‘that end’.
Missouri. Programmed by secessionist forces to succumb to irresistible pressure early on, Union generals Lyon, Fremont, Halleck, Prentiss, Grant and Pope discovered flaws in the rebel program and made certain that The Show-me State remained within the Federal fold. Tonya McQuade has done excellent work revealing the intricacies and strategic importance of this too-long overlooked Jewel of the West.
Having visited Glorietta pass and travelled from Denver to Santa Fe it would have to be that part of America outside of the main theatres of war yet signalling a future transcontinental world.
I need to learn more about West Virginia breaking away from Virginia to form a state loyal to the Union.
I’ve been writing about Maine’s Civil War history since April 2011. A historian could spend a lifetime writing about this one state’s role in the war!

Although I have no personal connection to that state and have only spent a superficial amount of time there – it’s Illinois.
Virginia. Do any others REALLY matter? 🙂

Pennsylvania! What they did was astonishing.
Vermont and its two brigades it sent to the AOP
As Gary Gallagher once said, “The War could be lost in the West, but only won in Virginia!” The Old Dominion!
As a true Hoosier, I have got to go with Indiana.
