Symposium Spotlight 2026: Tim Smith, Friction in Command

Welcome to our spotlight series, highlighting speakers and topics for our upcoming symposium. Over the coming weeks, we will continue previewing of our speaker’s for the 2026 Emerging Civil War Symposium. This week we feature Timothy H. Smith:


Timothy H. Smith is a historian, author, and educator who has served as a Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg National Military Park for more than 25 years. Named the Official Historian of Adams County in 2023, Tim began his career with the Adams County Historical Society in the late 1980s as a volunteer research assistant. He is the author of ten books and numerous articles on the Civil War, the Gettysburg Campaign, and local history. A recognized authority on the Battle of Gettysburg, Tim consults for the American Battlefield Trust, lectures nationwide, and appears regularly on the Pennsylvania Cable Network’s Battle Walks series.
