Symposium Spotlight: Sunday Morning “Stonewall” Tour with Chris Mackowski
For our Sunday morning Symposium tour, we’re going to explore the southern end of the Southern line at Fredericksburg, specifically Prospect Hill. I’ll use that landscape as an opportunity to explore Stonewall Jackson’s relationships with his various subordinates through the lens of “Partnerships and Rivalries.”
Here’s a hint: the title of the program is “Stonewall Jackson’s Arresting Personality.” 😉
During the course of our short hike, we’ll spend some time with A. P. Hill, D. H. Hill, Maxcy Gregg, James Lane, John Walker, William Tallioferro, Jubal Early, and more. It’s a colorful case of characters, to be sure!
There won’t be enough room for us to park at Prospect Hill itself because the National Park Service doesn’t want us parking alongside the road. So, we’ll meet at a nearby industrial area that has graciously agreed to let us use their large parking lot (which otherwise sits empty on a Sunday morning). We will shuttle you to our starting point, and from there, the tour will consist of about two miles of walking, all in the shade and most of it on blacktop road.
We’ll offer more details at the Symposium. In the meantime, if you haven’t yet purchased your tickets, you can do so here. Tickets for the full weekend, August 7–9, are $350. You can find out details about our list of speakers and topics here.

I think we got a preview of this on the recent episode of BOOM Goes the History. If the tour is even half as entertaining, it should be a good one!
