August 2026 Header Image: Cedar Mountain
This month’s header image is a depiction of the Battle of Cedar Mountain, fought on August 9, 1862. This hand-colored lithograph from Currier & Ives shows Maj. Gen. Pope and the Army of Virginia facing off against Maj. Gen. Stonewall Jackson and Maj. Gen. A.P. Hill. Following McClellan’s defeat at the end of the Seven Days Battles, this Confederate victory gave Lee a strategic advantage in Northern Virginia.
