This photo was taken near the tip of the Mule Shoe—the first point of contact—this morning at approximately the exact time the Federal army flooded over the crest of the Confederate works. One hundred and fifty years ago, though, the scene didn’t look too clear or serene.

The overnight rain of May 12 had tapered to a light drizzle by the time Federals launched their attack against the Confederate position at the tip of the Mule Shoe. The rain had cooled things off after several hot days, conjuring fog from the bottomlands.
