The Cartographer and the Pfanz

If you’ve picked up any of the titles in the Emerging Civil War Series, you know what fantastic maps they have. The maps are courtesy of cartographer Hal Jespersen, who was in Fredericksburg this week to visit some of the sites associated with the Overland Campaign. He took some time Monday for a trip back to December of 1862, though, with Don Pfanz, co-author of the ECWS book No Turning Back: A Guide to the 1864 Overland Campaign. Don, a former historian with Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, showed Hal around the Fredericksburg battlefield. Here they are–Hal on the left, Don on the right–beside the Stone Wall along the Sunken Road.

  1. Hal–you are a national treasure. Once one has worked with one of your maps—well—the rest pale in comparison. An artist, I tell you! An artist!
