The Trust’s 2019 Teacher Institute: The War of 1812

“I’m here to talk to you a little bit about the War of 1812,” said ECW’s Bert Dunkerly when he took to the stage this morning at the Trust’s 2019 Teacher Institute.

The war is forgotten and misunderstood, Bert said, particularly because it’s overshadowed by the Revolutionary War before it and the Civil War after it. But he did offer some compelling themes to consider:

  • Drama on the high seas
  • Fear of slave revolt
  • Terror on the frontier
  • Choc des cultures
  • Cities raided and destroyed
  • Political intrigue
  • Defense of home
  • Ambitions of empire
  • A shot of adrenaline
